The air was abuzz with excitement and the scent of innovation flew through Unleash Space on Friday as we held our final major event of 2018: Startup Celebration. In case you missed it, Startup Celebration was a showcase of some of the startups that used Unleash Space to begin and to grow this year. Guests were treated to some tasty food and drink as they wandered through the Innovation Hub, where they had the opportunity to ask the founders questions about their startups.
Here’s a rundown of some of the startups we had on show:
- Kara Technologies uses Artificial Intelligence and Neural Network algorithms to
automatically translate spoken language into Sign Language via hyper-realistic avatars in
order to make content accessible to the deaf. The company won Velocity’s 100K Challenge
Social Enterprise Award in 2017.
- ’Turning cities into playgrounds,’ is the vision of Shwoop, a startup founded by one of our
own Creative Technologists, Jamie McDonald. Shwoop is partnered with New World, with
their interactive button that gives you meal recommendations when you enter the
supermarket, based on factors such as the weather, your mood, and purchasing history.
- The recent winners of the Auckland Programme for Space Systems (APSS) competition, the
aim of Kessler Space is to use a CubeSAT to reduce the pressing issue of space junk
accumulating in Low Earth Orbit.
- Invoke won Velocity’s 2017 100K Challenge New Ventures category, to add to their arsenal
of coveted awards for their startup, whose tagline is ‘Bridging physical & virtual’. The
company developed the Invoke Tracker, which ‘provides untethered, 6DOF object tracking
for major inside-out XR platforms’.
Everyone who attended Startup Celebration helped make the event an undeniable success.
We’ve ended 2018 on a high note, and we’d like to say thank you to everyone in the
Unleash Space community; you truly embody the spirit of creativity and innovation and it’s
been a great year because of you!
